Room for improvement [Nov. 5th, 2009|08:03 pm]
[Feeling | tired]
[On my playlist |Eagle Eye Cherry, Save Tonight]

It's unfortunate that I've not been able to spare much time for blogging nowadays, but the sad truth is that since the new school semester began, time has once again become a luxury for me... I don't want to complain, but the past three weeks have been a blur of new modules, new lecturers and classes at eight in the morning, which I am still trying my best to get used to!

I'll admit I haven't fully adjusted to the back-to-school situation yet, but it's about time I got my act together - projects are coming in thick and fast, and pretty soon, I'll be running just to keep up. Looks like it's time for better organization skills so I know what I'll need to complete for school each day, a better attitude towards what I'm being taught, and an earlier sleeping time!

Good luck to me!

A birthday party is always an ideal excuse to let your hair down, especially if your fellow party-goers are old friends whom you've not seen for quite some time, but still share so much camaraderie and inside jokes with!
Ke Qin held an early celebration on the 17th at her family's plant nursery - picture-perfect, with pretty flowers and a rustic, country feel - but today's the actual day she turns 18, so
happy birthday, girl!

Embracing change [Oct. 18th, 2009|06:51 pm]
[Feeling | listless]

My security blankets?
People I'll always have a soft spot for, songs that I find myself humming along to year after year, and bad habits I can't seem to - or want to - kick.

But nothing is eternal. And when I have to let things go, this is what I tell myself, though I sometimes find it bittersweet:

It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar
and seemingly secure, to embrace the new.
But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful.
There is more security in the adventurous and exciting,
for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.

Legal! [Oct. 2nd, 2009|02:55 am]

[On my playlist |Black Eyed Peas, I Gotta Feeling]

At long last, I am 18 years old... a big thank you to everyone for the sweet birthday wishes, the gifts, and for celebrating the fact that I am finally of legal age with me!
Of course, the question now is what I shall proceed to cross off my list of to-do things first: Watch an M18 movie, take driving lessons, buy a lottery ticket, or go clubbing?

Seeing through different eyes [Sep. 24th, 2009|06:14 pm]
[Location |Serangoon Central, Singapore]
[Feeling | peaceful]

A stroll around the neighbourhood after lunch today translated into an unexpectedly pleasant journey full of pretty discoveries about the area my sister and I have grown up in.
I know I've called Serangoon a boring place more than once, but sometimes all it takes to see things differently is to approach it more curiously, with camera in hand, and a positive attitude towards finding out more about what you've come to take for granted!

Smells like teen spirit [Sep. 19th, 2009|02:43 am]

If I were to pick the perfume that brings me the most luscious joy, it would have to be Daisy by Marc Jacobs - a sweet delight, pure pleasure for the olfactory senses.
Daisy always seems to be the perfume I am wearing when good things happen to me. In my mind, it is what celebration should smell like... along with good humour, and other intangibles that make life just that little bit more fragrant, more wholesome, lovelier.

Daisy is the scent I wear to bed at night. It is also the perfume I travel with. Dabbing it on my wrists is the most effective cure for homesickness I know, which is why I took a little bottle of it with me to the Pulai Springs Resort in Johor Baru, Malaysia for the Poly Forum 2009, held from the 14th to 17th of September.

The Forum ended on a high note for me, because I had an incredible time. My fellow sub-theme members and our facilitators were full of enthusiasm and liveliness - I couldn't have asked for a better bunch of people to spend the four days with!
Together, we dissected and analysed the erosion of cultural identity, and there was plenty of food for thought for all the Singaporeans involved. I loved the level of engagement and discourse that existed during the presentation group's brainstorming sessions, because who can resist intelligent conversation or a heated debate?

I think I can say, confidently, that all of us fully relished the Poly Forum experience. One of the main highlights of my time in a polytechnic, without a doubt.

A small piece of linen, silk, or other fabric [Aug. 26th, 2009|01:48 am]
[Feeling | thoughtful]

Came across this while watching Boys Over Flowers:

The most unfortunate encounters are like those with fish bones.
The longer the encounter, the more the fishy smell sticks with you.

Encounters to be cautious about are like flower blossoms.
They bring exuberance during full bloom, but have to be discarded when wilted.

The most beautiful encounters are like those with handkerchiefs.
They wipe away your perspiration when you're tired, and your tears when you're sad.

I've met my fair share of fish bones, and I'm sad to say that there have been more ephemeral flower blossoms than I can count.
But handkerchiefs? I've had the good fortune to cross paths with a handful of them in my life so far... and I am more than grateful. I can only hope that I'm worthy of being considered a 'handkerchief encounter' by those I love, too.

One last look at my exam revision notes before they're put away for recycling:

The latest round of semestral examinations has been fruitful in terms of allowing me to realise how useful regularly reading through one's lesson notes can be - sadly, I didn't have the foresight to do so early on in the semester!

Of course, this means I've got my fingers crossed that I can pass all my papers and move on to the last semester of Year 2 without a hitch. And here's hoping that no one in my course has to sit in with our juniors next year to repeat any modules.

On to more cheerful news - the holidays have finally arrived! The past week of dark eye circles, nail-biting and coffee-drinking in order to accommodate as much last-minute revision as possible is over. It's time for my fellow students and I to reclaim our beauty sleep, our Facebook addiction, our obsession with Korean dramas, our shopping binges and so many other activities we'd sacrificed for the sake of school!

May the start of the next semester take its own sweet time to arrive!

I spent the day by the beach with a few relatives, and participated in the Pledge Moment with a plate of satay in one hand and a cup of green tea in the other. Here's looking forward to next year's 9th August!

Blastoise, I choose you! [Jul. 23rd, 2009|01:50 am]
[Feeling | drained]

I've been a little desperate for mindless entertainment of any kind recently, if only to escape from the colossal amount of work that seems to have suddenly been heaped on my shoulders... not that procrastination on my part had anything to do with it, of course!

Anyway, back in primary school I was always obsessed with playing Pokémon Red/Blue on a Gameboy Colour, because it was just so cool among my little 11-year-old peers then. And lately, I've been reminiscing about how satisfying it was to teach Gary Oak not to bully cute little female Pokémon trainers with pigtails every time I bumped into that annoying brat, whether it was in Cerulean City or aboard the S.S. Anne.

Let's put it this way: I'd rather train Pokémon than figure out how to orchestrate a PR campaign, examine what a media production manager's job duties involve, or worry about how to transport Japanese-themed furniture to one of NYP's multi-camera studios for a live show recording!

Lastly, no prizes for guessing which Pokémon I liked the most.
